Site of the First Land Battle of the Civil War
Philippi is famous as the site of the First Land Battle of the Civil war and for being home to the only two-lane covered bridge in the United State highway system. It is a picturesque little town with a small college (Alderson-Broaddus) on the hill overlooking the town.
